By and with: -ஆல், -ஓடு

மூன்றாம் வேற்றுமை: -ஆல், -ஓடு

English “with” has two jobs, and Tamil splits them: the tool you use takes -ஆல், the person you are with takes -ஓடு. -ஆல் also gives the cause, and who is able to do something.

How it is used

With a tool: -ஆல்

What you use to do something takes -ஆல்.

He cut the fruit with a knife.
I wrote with a pen.

Because of: -ஆல்

The cause of something also takes -ஆல்.

The game stopped because of the rain.

Together with: -ஓடு, -உடன்

Who or what you are with takes -ஓடு. -உடன் means the same and sounds a little more formal.

I went to the shop with mother.
She spoke with father.

Who is able: -ஆல் with முடியும்

“I can” is “by me it is possible”: என்னால் முடியும். More in the lesson on must and can.

I can run.
