The object: -ஐ

இரண்டாம் வேற்றுமை: -ஐ

The thing or person an action is done to takes -ஐ. Because the ending marks it, Tamil word order can change freely. Read each use, then fill the gaps.

How it is used

What the action is done to

The person or thing the verb acts on takes -ஐ. When the next word starts with a hard sound (க ச த ப), that sound doubles: மரத்தைப் பார்த்தேன்.

I saw the tree.
Mother called me.
She looked for the cat.

Things in general: leave it off

For things (not people), -ஐ is often left off when you mean “a” or “some”. Put it on when you mean a particular one.

I read (a book); I did some reading.
I read that book.

The ending, not the order, says who did what

Because -ஐ marks the object, the words can move. The subject has no ending, wherever it stands.

Thiruvalluvar wrote the Thirukkural.
The cat saw the snake.
