The case-ending machine

வேற்றுமை உருபு இயந்திரம்

English uses little words like “to”, “from” and “of”. Tamil puts an ending on the word instead: மரம் (tree), மரத்துக்கு (to the tree), மரத்திலிருந்து (from the tree). Pick a word and a meaning, and watch the word change first, then the ending join.

How the ending joins
  1. மரம்Start with the word.
  2. மரத்து-அம் becomes -அத்து before an ending.
  3. மரத்த் + ஐThe உ drops before a vowel. த் + ஐ → தை: the last consonant takes the ending's vowel.
  4. மரத்தை2nd case
நான் மரத்தைப் பார்த்தேன்.I saw the tree.
